What it is
When decay or a crack reaches the nerve, a tooth can become painful or infected. Root canal therapy cleans the inside of the tooth, seals it and stops the pain, so you keep your natural tooth instead of losing it.
Who it's for
- Lingering pain with hot or cold, or pain that wakes you up
- A swollen gum or pimple-like bump near a tooth
- A tooth that has darkened after an injury
What happens, step by step
- 01
Step 1: Diagnosis
An X-ray and simple tests show whether the nerve can be saved or needs treatment.
- 02
Step 2: Numbing
Profound local anesthetic, with nitrous oxide available. It feels like a long filling.
- 03
Step 3: Clean & seal
Under magnification, the canals are cleaned, shaped and sealed.
- 04
Step 4: Protect
A filling closes the tooth. Back teeth usually need a crown to prevent cracks.
Recovery and aftercare
The tooth may be tender to bite on for a few days. Avoid chewing hard foods on it until the final crown is placed.
Cost and insurance
Typically $950–$1,500 before insurance. Front teeth from $950, molars up to $1,500. Crown after treatment from $1,250. Typically covered at 50–80% by PPO plans. We give you a written estimate after your exam, before any treatment starts. See our full price list.
